In 1991, filmmaker Julie Dash broke through racial and gender boundaries with her Sundance award-winning film (Best Cinematography) Daughters of the Dust, and became the first African American woman to have a wide theatrical release of a feature film.
This compelling drama about three generations of Gullah women living on St. Helena Island (South Carolina) in 1902, was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being a national treasure.
