13 Oct Abdullah Ibrahim in Harlem Forever

Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) celebrated his 80th Birthday party at MIST Harlem on Wednesday October 15th, joined by Rene Mclean and band

Ibrahim has been hailed as the greatest exponent of Cape jazz, performing with artists such as Max Roach and Randy Weston. The legendary performer’s birthday bash coincides with the grand opening of Madiba Harlem, one of New York’s finest, authentic South African restaurants, made famous by its thriving Brooklyn location. The restaurant will celebrate its grand opening with a concert to remember.

During Ibrahim’s long and glorious career, he has toured the world extensively, performing as soloist with symphony orchestras and with legendary jazz artists. His music reflects many of the musical influences of his childhood in the multicultural port areas of Cape Town, ranging from traditional African songs to the gospel of the AME Church andragas, to more modern jazz and other Western styles. Ibrahim is considered the leading figure in the sub-genre Cape jazz. Within jazz, his music particularly reflects the influence of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington.
